RidgePad – Touch Detection with Smarts

Holz and Baudisch propose a new model for touch detection using ultra-sensitive touchscreens that can detect fingerprints, increasing accuracy to 1.8 times that of capacitive sensing. This is one more step toward smaller yet more intuitive touchscreens and fewer missed buttons.

Fat Fingers and Tiny Buttons

Patrick Baudisch, an HCI researcher at Hasso Plattner Institute in Berlin, describes some creative ideas for breaking down the fat finger size limitation on screen and button sizes. One technology he has worked on, nano touch, is described below.

The Invisible Jogger

Today I had an interesting conversation with An Yu, a cognitive science major at UCSD. We were discussing the potential applications for understanding synchrony. Another graduate student we know has done some work on researching people’s ability to synchronize with each other. They measured how well they could keep a simple beat, even when the …

ElectriSense

When SDGE and Google Powermeter provided a web interface for energy consumption back in 2010, I found myself hopelessly irritated and helpless with the lack of usable information. I could see that my power consumption had spiked a week earlier at 6pm but I had no idea what caused it. The tool provided more information …
